The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School and Covelli Enterprises/Panera Bread Organization held their very first collaborative “Outfits to Kids” charity event Dec. 22. The event took place at the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School during an ice cream social.
“The idea for this event began at the Charter School,” said K. Chase Patterson, a representative of Covelli Enterprises/Panera Bread.
“The guidance counselor noticed a need for some of the students at the school, as the winter weather began to change drastically. This is an important project for Panera because we are able to make an immediate tangible gift that will keep students warm and safe during the winter season.”
Winter gear and accessories were distributed to 220 student each given a hat, scarf, and pair of gloves. Students who were most in need were provided with coats and boots.

The school guidance counselor determined the need aspect, Patterson said.
“We wanted to provide ‘winter gear’ to each student and the full suite of gear to those most in need,” said Gail Edwards, PhD, principal of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School. “Every child/student should be provided with the appropriate clothing to make it through the extreme winter weather conditions.”

Life’s Work’s Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop provided the ice cream for the event, while PNC provided special Steelers scarves in addition to the scarves that were already provided by Panera Bread. Other individual sponsors have made individual contributions of food, coats, and other items.
The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School has been a partner of Covelli Enterprises/Panera Bread for almost three years.
“This year we choose to ad another dynamic to our relationship by digging deeper and making sure that each student would feel the impact of our giving during the holiday season,” Patterson said.
The charity event was successful, and one they plan to hold again in the future, Patterson said.
