The 2015 challenge

DEBBIE NORRELL

Hello readers. In a recent column I promised I would share a letter from a reader. I love this challenge and I think if I work real hard I can make this happen and I hope those of you that feel you need to make a change in your shopping habits and spending habits will do the same.  I have tried it before and I caved, but with anything like this, you have to keep trying over and over again. It is always easy to go the easy path.  I have not changed her letter, but I have added a few of my comments in parenthesis. Keep in contact with me ladies and gents on your progress and I will share mine. Let’s save some money in 2015 and find those minority store-owners.

Dear Debbie,
I am avid fan of your column and look forward to reading it every week. I know you have a large following and you are very influential with your readers. I am writing to request that you give your readers a challenge for the New Year.

My reason for this request is that, if you are familiar with the Willie Lynch theory of “the making of a Slave” he states that if the slave owners followed his method for controlling Black slaves they would control us for three hundred years. He made that speech on the James River in 1712, so the three hundred years was up in 2012. We must break the cycle and take back our lives. I am convinced that the only way to make White society listen to us is to control how and where we spend our dollars and how we cast our votes.
My small effort of doing this is controlling my money as much as possible. My resolution for 2014 was that I did not buy myself any new clothing for the entire year. I worked for over 40 years and am now retired; when I worked I bought clothes like crazy, now that I am not working I really don’t need to purchase new clothes. I don’t throw away anything, (really, Alice?) so I have plenty of clothes; so many that I had to turn an extra bedroom into a closet and dressing room (a lady after my own heart). When new styles come out, all I have to do is go to the back of my closet. I did not buy myself one stitch of clothing in 2014. I am really proud of myself that I was able to keep my resolution.
My resolution for 2015 is to make every effort to spend my money with Black owned businesses or businesses that have a good reputation for hiring and promoting African-Americans. If I have to drive 30 or 40 miles to spend $10.00 with a Black owned business, then I will do it.
So my request of you is to give yourself and your readers the challenge for 2015 to make every effort possible to spend their money with Black owned business.
Okay Alice, the challenge has been posted let’s see how we do.
