| The Center for Black Women’s Wellness
(CBWW) was recently awarded a $35,000 grant for its Women’s Economic Self Sufficiency Program (WESSP). This grant will allow CBWW to increase the opportunity to serve the participants of the WESSP program, which currently offers a 17-week educational program that helps women become self-employed by starting and operating a micro-enterprise. This programming is in strong alignment with The Coca-Cola Foundation’s focus on women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.
“Atlanta is well-known as a hub of entrepreneurial activity, and programs like WESSP ensure that low to moderate income women have access to the knowledge and resources they need to create a brighter financial future for themselves and their families,” says CBWW CEO Jemea Dorsey. “This grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation allows us to not only help more women obtain greater financial health and economic security, but to align with the aims of The Foundation in creating a stronger Atlanta.” Through WESSP, businesses in a variety of areas such as beauty, consumer goods, education, catering, and technology have been launched or strengthened.
Participants in the WESSP program receive much more than a comprehensive course on starting and operating a successful venture. The curriculum and support services include:
- Financial management and business development skills
- Business plan development
- Information and referrals to assist with physical and mental health management
- Business development though alumni networking meetings
With the grant, CBWW expects to provide services to 17 additional participants for the next cycle of the program, resulting in the creation of at least 13 new micro-enterprise ventures, as well as ongoing support to existing business owners who have already completed the program.
