
Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 140th Church Anniversary on Aug. 30. Pastor Emeritus Dr. J.V.A. Winsett preached the 10:30 a.m. service and Rev. Barbara Gunn, pastor of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, preached the 3 p.m. service.
Ebenezer, located on the corners of Wylie Avenue, Devillers and Davenport Streets, was organized on Aug. 10, 1875. The Rev. R. Henry Marshall (1885-1873) was the first pastor. On March 13, 2004, fire destroyed Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church leaving two Pittsburgh fire fighters dead, Richard A. Stefanakis, 51, and Charles G. Brace, 55, both of Pittsburgh. A new church was built on the same site in 2006.
The current pastor is Rev. Dr. Vincent K. Campbell of Ebenezer. Since his arrival at Ebenezer in September 2013, Rev. Campbell has served as a panelist for the African American Gubernatorial Candidates, and offered prayers and/or remarks at several prestigious events, including the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Dedication Ceremony at Sewickley Cemetery. He currently serves as the vice chair of the Hill District Ministers Alliance.
Reverend Campbell is preceded by Rev. Dr. J. Van Alfred Winsett who served as the senior pastor at Ebenezer for 39 years.
