CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) _ Uniformed officers will be attending services at Cedar Rapids churches as part of a recruitment and community education program.
Police say the visits will be similar to visits at schools and neighborhood events so the department can humanize officers and show residents what the officers do daily.
The recruitment is aimed at diversifying the police force.
Police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin told Cedar Rapids television station KCRG (https://bit.ly/1LFVwYf ) that the city is 6 to 7 percent African-American and 2 percent Hispanic, “and we don’t reflect that on our department. So, we are looking at different churches.”
