It’s that time of year again and the holiday season is upon us. This is the season to be jolly and help others along the way.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter recently kicked off the holiday season by hosting THE Sisters Feeding Families Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway.
The event was orchestrated by Committee Chairperson Debra L. Watts and Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter President Diane M. Jaden.
The event took place in the Lincoln Elementary School Cafeteria, where families were given a Thanksgiving meal package for the holidays.
“The holidays can be particular hard for some families,” said Watts.
An organization built on the core principals of sisterhood and service, the Deltas wanted to provide families with a chance to have a traditional sit down meal that they otherwise might not have the opportunity to do because of unfortunate financial circumstances.
This giveaway falls in line with their already active Feed the Hungry campaign.
“We would like to help as many families as possible by making sure they have a good meal and a chance to eat as a family,” said Watts.
The Thanksgiving meal package included a turkey, side dishes, vestibules, and a healthy meal guide in order to educate families on having healthier eating habits due to high incidence of type 2 diabetes.
Thanksgiving meal packages were distributed on a first come, first served basis. All meal packages were successfully distributed to families within the city.
“Its easy to overlook something as small as going to the grocery store to purchase items, which is why many families may not understand. But as a young single parent, events like this truly make the difference. Being blessed with this Thanksgiving meal package has provided me and my children to enjoy a full course delicious meal together for the holidays and its one less thing I have to worry about this holiday season,” Tracy Marshall of Braddock said.
