“Screaming cheap” was a phrase a good girlfriend of mine used to use whenever we would see someone in a cheap outfit or if we would run across something in a store that was poorly made. We wanted the bargains but we did not want them to look like bargains.
Recently I made a purchase that was against my better judgment. I have been looking at these outfits that appear on social media for a long time. They look so good in the picture. I even read a few reviews, which I’m sure now were false. And then I remembered the dress I ordered for my last birthday party it was from China and it turned out just fine. So maybe, just maybe these outfits would turn out to be a pleasant surprise. I ordered a white jumpsuit, a grey maxi dress and a red cocktail dress. When I logged in to order these items each one said “ships in 24 hours.”
I finally got a confirmation email that my package had been shipped and I was given a tracking number. This was a good sign. I checked the site and could see my package had arrived in New York and then it was in Pennsylvania and then a half opened package showed up on my doorstep. All three outfits were shoved into a flimsy plastic envelope. I can’t believe this package made it all the way to my house from China.
I could not wait to open the package and try on the outfits. I ordered sizes according to their chart for US sizes. I ordered each one in an extra-large; currently I wear a size 10. They said an XL would fit a size 12. I tried on the grey maxi first; this dress was to be a tee shirt type fabric, off the shoulder with three quarter length sleeves and the color grey like a sweatshirt. Let me say that none of these items have a label only a small tab that says “XL.” The dress fit but the fabric was an odd synthetic like the material of those old sweat suits men used to wear in the seventies.
Next I put on the jumpsuit. It was a mess. It was too tight and the pants legs were high water. It also was an off the shoulder jumpsuit. Each outfit was made with the cheap elastic around the shoulders, this was an attempt to make it fit.
I tried on the red dress last. This dress was pictured as a beautiful fit and flare dress with a high low hemline and a sweetheart neckline. The dress was missing the stays in the bodice therefore allowing the dress to roll down in the front.
Last week the Today Show did a segment on this very thing. They ordered a few items from these sites and their results were the same as mine. What a joke. I plan to send this bunch of junk back to China. Ladies these outfits are screaming cheap. Look but do not touch.
