Since the Bill Cosby sex scandal I have been in search of “The Cosby Show” DVD’s. I was looking everywhere and anywhere there was a bin of television show DVD’s for sale. Since the show is no longer on television I wanted to have this for my collection of Black shows.
I had just about given up my search when I was asked to provide a few copies of some of my old television commercials for an award I recently received. The Pittsburgh Black Media Federation was going to make a video to show at the awards ceremony so my “in house” hunt began for the commercials.
As I searched from room to room looking through old Amos and Andy VHS copies and Little Rascal DVD’s there it was a brand new unopened copy of The Best of The Cosby Show. It features 10 classic episodes of the legendary series as they appeared on network television. It says this is a must have for all television lovers and that description fits me perfectly. I am truly a lover of television.
As of this writing the cellophane is still on it. Since Bill Cosby has been back in the news I have lost interest. No I am not giving up my Cosby DVD and no I’m not selling it on eBay. It will sit on the shelf for a minute with the rest of my collection. Maybe I will pair it with the Bill Cosby “Fatherhood” book that I found at the flea market for twenty-five cents.
Now that I look at the book I wonder was this written from his role as a father of his biological children or his five television children. The back cover talks a little about what fatherhood is: pretending that the present you love most is soap on a rope. Knowing that you’re in trouble when the child says, “no problem.” Thinking that the height of fashion is matching socks. Helping your children learn English as a foreign language. Not being the boss of the house because you’ve seen the boss’s job and you don’t want it.
The inside jacket says from his earliest stand-up routines, through the Fat Albert cartoon series, the numerous commercials for Jell-O, Birds Eye and Coke and his block buster sit-com, The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby has become a loved and loving member of every American family.
That was 1985. Fast forward to 2016 now we look at an almost blind Bill Cosby who is being accused by dozens of women of sexual assault. They say they have been drugged and raped by the star and creator of The Cosby Show. Recently I listened to a transcript of the case brought against Cosby in 2005 by Andrea Constand. She says he gave her drugs at his home and he had sex with her. When she woke up he gave her a muffin and she was sent on her way. Later she introduces him to her parents and he paid for her schooling. I may never watch The Cosby Show again.
