Allegheny Family Network recently held its Annual Mental Health Expo at the Marriott City Center. This year’s theme, “Holding Hope,”centered around parents of children with mental health and emotional needs.
Understanding the difficulties of these debilitating illnesses while holding on to hope can be illusive. Thanks to Allegheny Family Network, its board of directors along with the Department of Human Services and staff, the needs of parents and children that deal with mental illness have resources at their disposal.
There are currently nine different support groups throughout Allegheny County. On this afternoon AFN, its support groups and many vendors made it possible for those who need information for family and friends.
The Mental Health Expo featured a variety of informed, inspired and enjoyable give-a-aways, along with music and laughter, creating a wonderful experience for the day.
A special thank-you went to Pat Valentine, the Deputy Director for Integrated Program Services, who shares the importance of the “Family Voice“ in the services provided to children with behavioral needs. The Keynote speaker was, Hakeem Rahim, “Lets Talk Mental Illness“ author. He shared his personal journey as an undergraduate and graduate student at Harvard. It was a tremendous response from families addressing mental illness.
