This may be the most important distinction of all: For many, being middle class is simply a state of mind. Less people are describing themselves as middle class….To me, this sounds like kids not wanting to be smart because it’s not cool, not hip. They know they are really smart, but feel more comfortable being with the bad kids or are not succeeding because being smart is like being White. I think what the people interviewed in the PG article were saying is that there is not a particular Black middle class neighborhood. Back in the day Blacks aspired to move to Churchill, Stanton Heights, Monroeville and Penn Hills because we felt somewhat welcome there.
