I didn’t realize how great these books are until I started writing this column. I found the Patti LaBelle book on sale at my favorite deep discounter, Gabe’s. I can’t tell you about my cookbooks without mentioning my favorite TV chef, G. Garvin. He has those fine lips like LL Cool J. Remember the show, “Turn Up the Heat With G. Garvin?” I love to see a man cooking in the kitchen. Garvin talks about presentation and setting the tone with music. He says music has the power to move you emotionally and he even suggests a playlist. This is another well done book with great information and handsome pictures. He begins the book with some basic recipes like garlic mashed potatoes, parmesan cheddar cheese grits, saffron sun-dried tomato risotto and jasmine rice. He says every cook needs a few tried and true side dish recipes that will back up lots of different entrees with satisfying flavors everyone knows and loves. Try his farfalle with ricotta, fresh spinach, sautéed chicken and plum tomatoes. This is in the chapter “All Things Pasta.”
And that’s what’s cooking.
