Gail Bean Hosts ‘Pass The Tongs’ Event At Morehouse

Kingsford brought the heat and the heritage to Morehouse College with its inaugural “Pass The Tongs” on-campus event, kicking off a powerful new initiative designed to celebrate grilling traditions while uplifting the next generation through culture, education, and authentic connection.

The activation took place during Morehouse’s Hump Wednesday celebration, a weekly student-led gathering on the iconic campus yard. Infused with the sights, smells, and sounds of a good old-fashioned cookout, the event marked the official launch of Pass The Tongs, Kingsford’s nationwide effort to honor barbecue not just as a culinary staple, but as a cultural bridge connecting generations through storytelling, tradition, and community.

At the heart of the Morehouse experience was a curated grilling activation led by celebrity chef Way, who served up smoky flavors and culinary wisdom. Students and guests gathered for an exclusive Fireside Chat with actress and Dream Above the Influence founder Gail Bean, best known for her work in “Snowfall.” The discussion was hosted by Isaiah Evans, a rising junior majoring in business marketing at Morehouse and the 2025 HBCU Buzz HBCU Host of the Year.

The conversation delved deep into the cultural roots of BBQ, the importance of tradition in community identity, and the pursuit of dreams in the face of adversity. Bean reflected on her personal memories of barbecue and her connection to Kingsford, applauding the brand for “showing up in a way that makes people feel seen.”

Kingsford’s Pass The Tongs initiative will continue to build momentum this fall with two major Atlanta-based events that further the mission of preserving barbecue culture while empowering Black voices and traditions:

During Morehouse Homecoming, Kingsford will return to campus for a fully immersive cookout experience, including hands-on grilling stations, culture trivia, and community-centered moments that honor legacy. The event will feature a special appearance by celebrity pitmaster and Preserve the Pit alum Pat Neely, who will add depth and flavor to the ongoing celebration of tradition.

Through Pass The Tongs, Kingsford is proving that barbecue is more than just food—it’s a tradition that educates, empowers, and unites. As the program expands, it continues to make space for the next generation of leaders to connect, create, and carry the culture forward, one plate at a time.
